Meet five very special dogs coming to the sanctuary
A big black mastiff was dropped off at a shelter in New York. He was in great pain and was suffering from chronic ear problems from neglect. He is not a lap dog, not a cute little
fluffy ball of fur. He is a big love a big cuddly teddy bear. One, we have been told no matter what the vets and techs were doing to him he would only give them kisses. Almost as if he knew that if he was strong and just endured a bit more that life was going to be wonderful for him. It was determined he had to have surgery on both of his ears. $5,000 was raised for his first surgery. It took two surgeries – two days to finally complete both ears. A plea was put out for rescue but no one even stepped up and said ok I will. You see he also has an entropian eye – needs to be neutered and his ears need more work. I was sent his picture along with these words:
He
was diagnosed with chronic, severe cauliflower ears, which have caused him to
suffer tremendous pain.
His surgery consisted of two separate procedures (two days apart) as the
surgery is complicated and recovery will be uncomfortable for him.
It has been determined that his condition is due to severe neglect. He has
spent all of his young life without any care.
My concern is, that following surgery, he has no place to return to other than
the shelter According to the staff, vets and trainer;
he has a wonderful
temperament despite his pain and has never shown aggression of any kind. He
even loves a bath!
He will require a special needs/ lots of attention type
home as he will be hearing impaired.
Janice
There was no way I could say no. His only other choice was to go back to the shelter and it was doubted that he would be adopted. So a baby who had endured pain through his neglected life, and then endured the pain of surgery might then endure the sadness of going back to a shelter and being put down. Somehow it did not make sense to me and in what rescue means to me, I could not let it happen. Kanjii is on his way to the Sanctuary. Thanks to the hard work of JoJo, Diane, and Polly, he is now going to be safe.
When he gets here he is going to need more help. He deserves a chance to live a good life. He will have hearing issues, he needs the surgery on his eye, he needs his ears tended to and possibly more help. He also needs eye surgery.

Well we knew he was coming to the Sanctuary and then we had to figure out the way to get him here. We could not have him in a transported with a lot of animals. Professional transport was too expensive and we were not having a lot of help in developing legs on a run. We have been planning a trip to California to pick up three dogs with a return through Missouri to pick up another so Joe and Willie said well what if we just go to New York after that and get him as well. So this Friday they will fly to California and meet with Jennifer Pryor of Pryors Planet (www.pryorsplanet.org) and Joan to pick up Riley, Kutani, and Dakota leave for Missouri. They have carefully picked dog friendly hotels along the route back. In Missouri they will pick up Kemo and head for New York where they will pick up Kanjii.
Riley
(left) is a sweet pit bull that is coming to stay with us. He is a big goof of
a boy and very very friendly. My love of pitts will always have me advocating
for this breed. He is stunning to look at isn’t he? I am excited to have him
join our babies here. He comes from Pryors Planet which is directed by
Jennifer Pryor. Richard Pryor and Jennifer have always been animal
advocates. Upon his death Jennifer has grown Pryors Planet into a national
organization. Please visit their site at
www.pryorsplanet.org. Riley is a
big goof of a dog and you can tell by his smile that he loves life. We
anxiously await his arrival.
Dakota is an Akita that is a
beauty. Abused he has some people issues but Jennifer
and
her group out there have done an amazing job with him and he now is much more
confident and truly a love. We will continue to work with him and hope one day
to place him in a very akita savvy home. He deserves it and we will do out best
to see it happen. This baby was so head shy he looked as if the
world were caving in on him if you would try and touch him. Jennifer and
her group have worked a lot with him and he has now changed so drastically that
you can see the difference in him. He now smiles - in the first pictures I
saw of him it looked as if he just wished he could crawl into a hole and forget
the world. We hope that we can continue on with his training and that one
day he will be happy in a new home.
Kutani
is an old chow. He was attacked and thanks to the group out in California he
has received stitches. He has Alpecia along his back and they thought he had
Addisons but testing has shown he does not. We will love him for whatever time
he has left. These are out California dogs. I received a note from Joan
this morning who had picked Kutani up at the shelter and he is now at her home,
this is what she wrote.
This is a show stopping looking white
dog. He may be samoyed and Akita, not chow at all. he is TALL and handsome. He
is NOT OLD. One vet said 8 yrs old, Dr. Adams guess is 5-7 yrs old. He is in
my kitchen curled up on a comfy double rug. He moves like an akita, like a
horse, prances. He is thin but he will be fine.
I hope I can find someone to foster, I hate to kennel him....I may call in sick
tomorrow so I don't have to send him to a kennel and work on finding a foster.
He should have a good, long life. He was negative to the addison test - Dr.
Adams says it's good to do a second test in a month. I took him to adoption
today.... he was well behaved and a good boy. Joan

We are thankful to Joan for all the work she has done with Kutani and making sure he is safe until we get there. We are thrilled with the addisons report and will have the vet check him again in another two months.
Joan took Kutani to an event as you can read above.
Just now I received some pictures of him that I have to share - the dog has
already made a transformation and is as beautiful as they come.

He
needs a lot of weight put on him but my god look at that face.

So on they leave California and
move on to Missouri. Here they will pick up Kemo.
A
very sweet and beautiful Akita that no one would take. All of us got the email
on him and were emailing back and forth between Polly, JoJo, and Mark.
Mark was in Missouri and so rushed to the shelter to get him out and to get him
safe until we can make the journey to get him. Mark has spent time with him and
says he is a love. Look at those eyes who could not want him. Our goal with
him is to get him here, work with him and find him an Akita savvy home. He
is beautifully marked. Sweet and kind.
From there we move on to New York. I cannot tell you how thankful we are to Joe and Willie for agreeing to do this very special transport. It is a lot of driving and a lot of stops. A very special run for five great dogs.
Here is where we pick up out beloved Kanjii. This boy has suffered a life of neglect with the consequence being chronic cauliflower ears. A donor paid $5,000 for his surgery to correct them but then no rescue would speak up for him. We received the cry for his help and could not say no.
Kanji is in severe pain. Although everything will be done to make Kanjii’s transport comfortable we also know the great deal of pain this baby is in during a regular day. We are of course worried about engine noise, car movements the vibration etc. We are confident that Joe and Willie will do all that he can do to make this trip as gentle on Kanjii as possible.
We will get him back here we hope next Saturday where he will be rested for a few days and then taken to a vet, who has agreed to undertake the rest of his care.
We know that there are several things left to do and know
that we will get them done. Some might say why waste the time but there are
those of us that believe that each and every animal deserves a chance. And well
also those that have had it as rough as this boy, deserve the chance to see what
life really should be like. To be able to run and get hugs and to be able to
kiss without being hit or pushed away. To feel a PAIN FREE life for the first
time. For me these animals are my passion. They haunt my sleep and my days
until I can help them. I am blessed with so many friends who help with this.
And blessed to have these babies also show me life as it is to be.
Yes now comes the part where we ask for help. I never want to ask, but sadly the world of rescue is one after another. If you can spare a dollar – or even five we appreciate it for Kutani and Kanjii and the others. All donations are tax deductible. If you would like to send a donation through paypal please send to SARefuge@aol.com and mark with KANJII or Kutani.
Kanjii and Kutani will be featured in our November newsletter with up to date pictures and progress reports. As well as comments and pictures at vets office. They both send great big slobbery mastiff/chow kiss to all of those that help him. Mind you it’s the prayers as well as the uplifting thoughts for him that also matter greatly and will help him. We can also use bandages – antibiotics – etc. for when he comes home. We will know more after he sees the vet and will post his info on our website and through news memos. We know that there are many that support us that cannot afford to donate. We want you to know that your support in positive thought and belief make as much difference in the day to day care of the animals. It is felt and known.
We have another boy awaiting transport from Georgia
(below left). He will be ready soon. A young rott mix. Someone thought it
would
be great to put a hook through his penis. The vet says you can put a finger
through the hole in him. He is also a love. Happy to be out of the shelter
and care for him will begin soon. We have named him Mojo. We will begin his
care in Georgia and when healed he will come to us at the Sanctuary.
A story
I would like to share is about Jabooty. A little pom boy that Shirin begged me
to save. He is very tiny about 4 pounds and very old. I could not take
Shirin's begging so I said yes. She rushed to the shelter to get him and took
him to vet and home. She was afraid that he would not be able to make the
transport comfortably as this dog has bitten everyone including her and her
husband Michael. She felt she should keep him and work with him and I agreed.
After countless bites she made a break though with him and now no one will
believe how horrid he was. Love and patience and kindness to any animals does
make a difference. Little Jabooty is living a great life with lots of love. I
am thankful that Shirin badgered me into rescuing him. Here it is in Shirin’s
words…..
So much to tell you about Jabooty. I have spent
most of my time with him since he was so upset and bit us endlessly. I had a
long talk
with
him one night and as if he understood every thing I told him, he let me pick him
up again and now he does not leave me alone for one second. He follows me every
where and sits on my lap the second I sit down. If I sit on the floor to pick
something up, he will jump on my back!!! He has fallen in love with me. He is my
shadow now. we took him out so could be social with others
and Oh, NO!!! he gets back to being vicious! he is OK with Michael but when I am
there. he has made friends with all the cats and the dogs and walks around as if
has lived here all his life. He sleeps under my arm. The first couple of
nights he would bark at Michael every time he moved and
now he sleeps through the night on the bed with us and two other kitties with 4
baby kittens!!!
I can't believe this is the same baby. No one believes me. I sent a picture to
the shelter so they would believe me since he had bitten all of them and they
thought they would have to put him down for sure. Even at the vet, they had to
sedate him to get his tests done. He listens to everything I say. What
magic!!!! He is gaining
weight and feeling much better. Such a big
world for him. I am blessed with his love, I must have done something good in
life! Shirin
We wish
to thank each and every person who has been involved in the rescue of these
babies. You each know who you are. Without all of you they would not have had a
chance. I may not know all your names but I can tell you they know each of your
hearts. It is with the kindest of hearts and the greatest of souls that someone
stops for a moment in the day to help the dogs like Kanjii. It is with the love
of an angel that any person stops to help an injured, abused or neglected
animals. Although your names may be forgotten – although you may not appear to
some to be the hero you are, although you may not be thanked enough, or given
enough credit – know that each animal helped will forever hold a part of you in
their soul.
If you want to donate any medicines, blankets, bandages for their care in lieu of a monetary donation it is very welcomed - we are in need of antiobiotics, worm meds, droncit, preventix collars, bandages, toys, treats, etc. Every little thing makes a huge difference.
